80th Anniversary of the Czech Fox Terrier Club (published in the Year Book of the FTC in UK 2008)
Allow me to introduce you to our Club in this short historical hindsight. During 2008, the Czech Fox Terrier Club celebrated its’ 80th Anniversary. It all startwed when our first Fox Terriers were imported into the Austrian-Hungary monarchy in the second part of the 19th century. Two national associations for hunting dogs were formed in 1880 and 1883. By 1924 Fox Terriers were part and parcel of the Czech Terrier Club. In 1925 the “Earth Dog” club was founded and this was followed by the formation of a further club in 1928----the Czech Fox Terrier Club. At this time there were over 1,000 puppies yearly being produced, mainly Wires. Therefore three clubs existed which were interested in fox terrier breeding. In 1941 the other two clubs joined forces with the Czech Fox Terrier Club, the first President of which was Emanuel Liby. During the early years the most active kennels were PERUN, JANOVA HORA, HELMEC and IRIS owned by Dr Fencik Mukacevo, Frantisek Jandik, Karel Roman and Ing Petak respectively. The first show for Fox Terriers was held at the Moravian Dog Show in 1924 where the well known German Pointer breede Karel Podhajsky officiated. The first great International succcess came with the dog Firefield Povam who won at the International Show in Leipzig.
From 1939 to 1945 the club was stigmatized by the Second World War and therefore not many events were organised. However breeders continued to produce litters and used many of the best German stud dogs.
After the Second World War ended there was a new political system which made it impossible to continue to use the best kennels abroad. Wires were still the most usable from all the earth dogs. Imported Wires were Kaminfeger v Katharinenhof by Dr Jicinsky and Regent Styria by Dr Patak. In Smooths Bebenstreich v Tempelstein by Mr Hedvabny and Burkhards Perspective by Dr Jicinsky.
By the Sixties the most active kennels were Dr Jicinsky’s TRIANGEL, Dr Brazda’s TAXON and Dr Brejnik’s FARINA. In Smooths an excellent stud dog was imported from France. This was Nip de Malvau. Also Otter Nordwest from Germany. In Wires Whitewyre Marsching was imported. In 1965 the first World Dog Show was organised in Czechoslovalia at Brno where Triangel Javelin gained the title R-CACIB.
During the Seventies a co-operation with the well known v. d. Bismarckquelle kennel from Germany began. Especially influential were the Smooth dogs Piet and Vino v.d. Bismarckquelle which were strongly based on Newmaidley lines and the Wire dog Zerus v.d. Bismarckquelle.During the early seventies there were over 800 Wires and 130 Smooths registered. In 1980 breeder/owner Frantisek Sveda gained the European title winner with Darina ze Silfova dolu.
During the eighties the best Czechoslovakian kennels were the Wire kennels of Dr Brazda (TAXON), Mrs Letackova’s (z RIFU), Mrs Strnadova’s (z EMAUZE), Mr Aujesky’s (z Kacerovky), and Mr Sedik’s (TORNADO) which was both Wire and Smooth. Also there was the Smooth kennel of Mr Sveda (ze SILFOVA DOLU).In 1988 Dr Brazda imported the Wire dog Corpus v.d. Bismarckquelle and the Smooths Rocky v.d. Bismarckquelle and Aniara v.d. Bismarckquelle.. In 1990 the Smooth Argo ze Silfova dolu became World Junior winner. Both Corpus and Rocky continued to improve our lines and helped to hold both type and character.
During this period and after the “Velvet Revolution” democracy took over. In the early nineties there came an end to the regulated method of breeding and in its place came the open method of breeding which meant that the breeder could choose an optional stud dog. In 1991 our friends from Slovakia left our club. From 1992 it has not been necessary for stud dogs and brood bitches to pass trials. However over 50% of brood bitches and 66% of stud dogs have passed some form of hunting trials. In fact many of our dogs become universal working dogs and working champions including international working champions.
In Smooths three great dogs were imported, these being Oskar de la Rosa, Kenno v.d. Bismarckquelle and Xambo Of Fair Play and each of these have sired 50 litters. The best of Oskar’s have been his grandsons, Interchampions, Universal working dogs Erney Steinbach Terry and Chart Tuskulum who is also a European winner and great grand daughter Int Ch Zimni Zare od Rytire Malovce. The best son of Xambo being Enrico od Hrubeho L esa who is an Interchampion at work. In Wires Frantisek Polehna’s STAR FRANKE kennel has been used with success including the imported dog WW Travella Strike Twice. Also the Finnish kennel STARRING HANS has been influential.
Today our most active kennels in Smooths are Iveta Novakova’s OD RYTIRE MALOVCE, Frantisk Sveda’s ZE SILFOVA DOLU,, Lubomir Chmelar’s SUPER PRIDE, Vladimir Hutecka’s TUSKULUM, Martin Pospical’s OD HRUBEHO LESA and Radek Slovacek’s Z DEKANU. In Wires there is Frantisek Polehna’s STAR FRANKE, Dalibor Smekal’s BENKOVSKEHO KOPCE, Bohuslav Papez’ STEINBACH TERRY, Antonin Kohler’s Z Lankace and Oldrich Rysavy’sZ LIPAVY.
The club organises three club shows and six or more club trials each year. Titles on offer are those of TOP FOX TERRIER and CLUB CHAMPION (at work and in beauty). Our members have shown many dogs in International, European and World Dog Shows. In 2008 we celebrated our club’s history with the main event being a double show held at the beginning of September where we entertained Elke and Axel Mohrke from the famous v.d. Bismarckquelle kennel.
As the club’s Breeding Manager I want to maintain and improve the quality of Fox Terriers within the Czech Republic. Fortunately we have an advantage as many of our breeders are young people who are active in Smooth and Wire Fox Tertriers.
